    it is RATO, but everyone mistakenly calls it JATO... some of Airborne's DC-9's originally had two per side (to my knowledge none were ever fired though, they were just there to legally allow a shorter runway to be used)

    Technically it's a RATO system because it uses solid fuel rocket motors regardless of what they call it. A true JATO uses turbojet engines as mounted outboard on C-123 wings and on top of C-119's.

    Thats correct. Its JATO. Was stationed at NAS Pensacola. Reenlisted onboard Fat Albert C-130. It's flown by Marines.
